SOUP NUTSY OPENS FIRST CANADIAN LOCATION
TORONTO, Ontario, May 11th, 1998 - Soup Nutsy Canada Inc. today announced the opening of its first Canadian restaurant, the Soup Market, located at the Concourse Level of 222 Bay Street which is the Ernst & Young Tower of the Toronto Dominion Centre in the heart of downtown Toronto. Soup Nutsy Canada Inc. is an affiliate of Soup Nutsy Corporation which opened its first outlet in New York City in 1996 and has consistently catered to long lunch line-ups ever since. Soup Nutsy specializes in gourmet soups for the lunch and the take-home markets. Daily, the Soup Nutsy Soup Market offers 12 or more varieties of hot and cold gourmet soups selected from a list of over 200 carefully developed recipes bound to please virtually every taste preference. The soups come in three serving sizes and include a generous chunk of freshly baked bread or a bread roll and a seasonal fresh fruit to round out a complete meal. Soup Nutsy soups are not just ordinary soups but outrageously delicious soups that are served up with an attitude made famous by an episode of the Seinfeld television sitcom called the "Soup Nazi". In that episode the Seinfeld cast puts up with much abuse from the restaurant owner just to get a serving of delicious soup. Although the Seinfeld show may have elevated the status of soup as a gourmet culinary experience, the phenomena is actually the result of a emerging industry trend towards healthier, more nutritious alternatives for the quick service, fast food market. Evolving demographics of the baby-boomer generation entering more health conscious middle age is resulting in a demand for low sodium, low cholesterol eating. Their more experienced palates are also demanding a greater variety than traditional fast food has offered. Soup Nutsy caters to these emerging trends with its slow-cooked, homestyle, gourmet soups of multi-cultural origins that emphasize both healthful and deliciously tasteful traits. In addition to take-out or take-home, the downtown Toronto location plans to offer a delivery service to the surrounding office towers and provides a list of the daily selections over the worldwide web with online ordering in the future. The web site is located at www.soupnutsy.ca. The first Canadian location is also the prototype for franchising of the concept that the company plans to undertake. Soup Nutsy will extensively franchise its brand throughout North America and worldwide beginning later this year. The Soup Nutsy management team consists of a group of senior executives with extensive restaurant and franchising experience.
